Green season or dry season?
What changes through the year in Kruger: game viewing, birds, rain and rates.
Two seasons, two safaris
Birding Ecotours puts the mammal peak at about May to September, “arguably” July to September, when the dry season concentrates animals around waterholes and rivers. For birds, it says many species are “largely present from October through March”, and summer brings breeding plumage. Summer mammal viewing is still good, just in thicker bush.
Rain and temperature at Skukuza
Average monthly rainfall in mm (1991–2020 normals). The wettest month averages 111 mm; the driest 9 mm. Daytime highs range from about 27°C in winter to 34°C in summer.
Rates follow the seasons
Many lodges publish lower green-season or shoulder rates. On Safari Shortlist, 68 lodges publish more than one rate period. Set your dates in search and every price updates; the month-by-month guide shows what each month is like.
