Self-drive Kruger or a private reserve?

The biggest decision in planning a Kruger safari, with real costs from published rates.

The difference in one line

Self-drive means your own car on Kruger's public roads, staying in SANParks rest camps. A private reserve means a lodge with guides, open vehicles and the reserve's own rules, usually with meals and drives included.

Cost, on your dates

€112median all-in per person per night, SANParks rest camps
€677median all-in per person per night, private lodges

“All-in” is Safari Shortlist's comparable figure: the published rate plus known levies, Kruger conservation fees and an estimate for self-catering meals where they aren't included. International visitors pay a Kruger daily conservation fee of R692 per adult from 1 November 2026 (ATTA).

Rules of the road

In the national park, SANParks rules say vehicles must stay on designated roads, gate times “must be strictly adhered to”, and after-hours driving is not allowed. You may only get out of your car in designated areas.

In private reserves, guides follow the reserve's own rules. Londolozi describes guests being able to watch animals “without a load of other vehicles arriving into the sighting” because vehicle numbers are kept low.

Choose self-drive if…

  • Budget matters most.
  • You like setting your own pace and route.
  • You're travelling with young children (every rest camp takes all ages).

Choose a private reserve if…

  • You want expert guiding and trackers.
  • You'd like walks (included at 82 of 155 private lodges on Safari Shortlist).
  • You want meals and drives arranged for you.

Many people do both: a few nights self-driving, then a private lodge. The trip planner combines them into one total.
